FAQ - Contraceptive Injections (Depo-Provera)

What is the contraceptive injection (Depo-Provera)?

Depo-Provera is an injection of progesterone that prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation (an egg being released from the ovary).

The injection is given by your healthcare provider once every 12 weeks. You will be given an injection calendar that tells you when your injection is due.

How effective is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is more than 99% effective when injections are given at the correct time.

What if I am late for my injection?

You have a 2 week window in which to get your next dose. If you are more than 14 days late for an injection, it is our policy that you must abstain from sexual intercourse for 2 weeks, take a urine pregnancy test, and if the results are negative, call the office to set up your injection.

What are the side effects of Depo-Provera?

The most common side effects of Depo-Provera are irregular spotting/bleeding, nausea, weight gain, and headache. Most symptoms will resolve after the second injection of Depo-Provera. Most people who use Depo-Provera eventually have no period at all.
