FAQ - Diaphragm

What is a diaphragm?

The diaphragm is a barrier method of birth control. This means that the diaphragm serves as a barrier against sperm getting to the cervical opening.

A diaphragm is a dome shaped rubber cap that is inserted into the vagina just prior to sexual intercourse. One rim is tucked behind that cervix, while the other end rests on the pubic bone.

How effective is the diaphragm?

The diaphragm is about 80-85% effective. The decreased effectiveness can be due to improper use or improper fit. You can apply spermicide to the diaphragm to maximize effectiveness.

How do I get a diaphragm that fits correctly?

You will need to schedule an appointment with your doctor for a diaphragm fitting. Your physician will use sample diaphragms in order to see which size is the best fit to cover your cervix. You will then get a prescription to take to the pharmacy to obtain the correct diaphragm. You should replace your diaphragm yearly or if it is lost or damaged.

Do I ever need to be re-fit for a diaphragm?

You may need to be re-fitted for a diaphragm if you have lost or gained weight or had a baby.
