FAQ - Vaginal Infections

The vagina has a normal discharge that is clear or cloudy and whitish in color. The vagina maintains a healthy balance of many organisms such as bacteria and yeast. Many factors can affect this balance:

  • Antibiotics
  • Changes in hormonal levels due to pregnancy, menopause and other physiological changes
  • Spermicides
  • Sexual Intercourse
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

A women can have various types of vaginal infections. The most common is a yeast (candidiasis) infection. The next most common infection is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Symptoms for BV include a thin discharge that is dark gray to dull gray in color and is associated with a fishy odor. If you have these symptoms you need to call the office for an appointment.
